Como eras, como ayer

Pablo Neruda

[Pablo Neruda]

Friday 17th. The exhibition opens to the public. With tired eyes. And it is immediately a slap on the shoulders.

To turn those shoulders quickly, without being able, it was a crazy desire when a short time before the last picture you had been given was shooting in the face full tubes of medicines, beating, wounding, disturbing. It had syringe colours. It had strong hands. It had sounds to stop one’s ears. It had a frame ulcerating the flesh. A white-and-black palette. And a sunken canvas, eaten to the soul by mad cells. What a portrait, it was, what an art: wool on swollen feet, air bed under still legs, oxygen boiling in the head and sea into the lungs. There turpentine was gliding, there morphine was sticking. Till saying the most senseless mess, till apologizing for the disturb, I’m sorry, I am so sorry. Then what to reply, what to believe…

Now just watching that chapel fresco, for nothing, not succeeding in doing anything any more. Not even a retouch to the painting, not even a gauze to dry a little bit the pain, not even a right brush to write thanks for everything, at the bottom, in lower-case letters. Here it is where life invites you: in the nails on a wall of memories. To a procession of glass tears. In garlands of roses, bent heads, orchids. Also in marble and a card poem, explain me why. But it is not always like this, I fool myself. Surely two fingers will come one night, whispering to the cheeks a caress that has the tepidness of a living soul, or who knows what else. In that, onwards I dream. Especially in that.

Come ieri, come eri

[Pablo Neruda]

Venerdì 17. Si apre l’esposizione agli spettatori. Con occhi stanchi. Ed è subito una pacca sulle spalle.

Girare quelle spalle in fretta, senza potere, era una voglia matta quando poco prima l’ultimo quadro che ti avevano dato sparava in faccia tubetti interi di medicine, picchiava, feriva, disturbava. Aveva colori siringhe. Aveva mani forti. Allora cosa rispondere, cosa credere…

In quello, d’ora in poi sogno. Specialmente in quello.

* “I remember you, as you were in the last autumn./You were the grey beret and the calm heart./In your eyes the flames of the twilight fought on./And the leaves fell in the water of your soul.”
